Ravensburg's Count Herman the Fourth founded Bielefeld in 1215 and the city was known as the "city of linen". In 1851, the Bozi brothers established the first big mechanical spinning mill after the opening of the Cologne-Minden Railway in 1849. From 1854 to 1857, the Ravensburg Spinning Mill was worked on, opening up the metalwork industry in the 1860s. Then, a municipal theater, a railway station and the Rudolf-Oetker-Halle concert hall were opened between 1904 and 1930. Now, guests of Bielefeld hotels can enjoy the rich culture of this German city. History and modern amenities go hand in hand here.
The Nachtansichten is a cultural festival featuring churches, galleries and museums. They all participate, contributing performances, light shows and exhibits. Music, dancing, costumes and all sorts of festivities liven up this event held in April.
In May, Bielefeld hosts the Leineweber Market, which is said to be the biggest street festival in all of East Westfalia. Leineweber means "linen weaver" and the festival is held for three days, featuring folk tales, jazz, theater, rock, cabaret, an acrobat, live music and more. There is also a fairground area featuring traditional carnival rides such as bumper cars, a ferris wheel, a miniature train ride and other activities for kids.
The Sparrenburg Festival honors the Middle Ages and lasts for three days at the Sparrenburg Castle. It features beggars, storytellers, magicians, minstrels, preachers and more. It is another three-day event, held in July. There are also medieval style vendors selling crafts and other items. The festival offers package deals, with the Day Package including admission, vouchers to get snacks in the festival, a guided tour of the town lasting two hours and a city information pack with a small gift. The Weekend Package includes all of the above, plus one night in one of the Bielefeld hotels, a breakfast buffet, a drink of mead upon entering the festival and a tourist card, which provides visitors with free public transportation, free admission to the Sparrenburg Castle and free admission to eight museums.
Guests who do not visit in July can still enjoy Bielefeld's Sparrenburg Castle. It features a one hundred and twenty-one foot high tower and catacombs, which are both open to the public. The castle was built by Count Ludwig von Ravensburg from 1240 to 1250. The first level is open all year and admission is free, but the rest of the castle requires a tour from April through October. The northwest area of the underground portion only hosts tours three times a year due to bat inhabitation.
Bielefeld's old town district is home to the Old Market Square, or Alter Markt, filled with historic buildings and intricate decorations. It features a collection of Patrician homes, one highlight being the gothic themed Cruwell House from circa 1530. The steps feature sixteenth and eighteenth century Delth tiles. Old Market Square is also home to the Leineweber Market, Nachtansichten, the Wine Festival, La Strada and the Christmas Market.
The previously mentioned Rudolf-Oetker-Halle still stands today, with famous acoustics and one of a kind architecture. Aficionados have named this one of Europe's most gorgeous concert halls. Additionally, each summer, it is home to the Dance Festival Bielefeld and other cultural and musical happenings. It is found near the Burgerpark, which features a noteworthy rose garden.
The Heimat-Tierpark Olderdissen, or Olderdissen Animal Park, is home to approximately four hundred and fifty animals representing one hundred local species. Some of these are endangered and the park has preserved and bred these animals to keep them from becoming extinct. The park also features forest, meadows and ponds and a brown bear exhibit.
